Southern Utah MTB Trip

Sept 5-9th MTB Camping Trip

We wanted to have one more MTB/camping trip before Tess has the baby. She won't be riding the dangerous trails, but she will probably ride some easier ones and paved trails (if she's feeling up to it)

This trip is open to mountain bikers and non-riders too. There will be a handful of people who don't ride on this trip.

This is not a guided tour. This is just a group of friends getting together to enjoy the outdoors. Even though it's southern Utah, we will be camping at high elevation, and it'll get chilly at night. Daytime temps should be perfect.

You're invited! Please RSVP if you can make it. We don't need any permits on this one, and we're not in any national parks, so there's no limit to the number of people who come and dogs are allowed. Please bring all the bike racks you can.

I'll try to recommend a beginner/int ride and an advanced ride each day. We're pretty relaxed with the planning.

Wednesday, Sept 5th - Drive down and Camp

Picture
Drive down from SLC to camp. I'm happy to pick anyone up from the airport if they need a ride. Vegas airport is an option too for those flying in, but you'll have to rent a car and drive from there.

4PM
Drive down, arrive at camp in the evening.

8PM
Camp here in Reds Canyon. We are a HUGE group, so please remember leave no trace and Tread Lightly! principles. There should be room for us here.

Thursday, Sept 6th - Thunder Mountain

Picture
Intermediate/Advanced Ride: Thunder Moutnain

We'll be riding one of Utah's most iconic trails, Thunder Mountain. I've never been, but it's been on my list for a long time. Trail info here:
https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/1868735/thunder-mountain-trail-33098

We'll need some vehicles to shuttle us to the top a few times so we can ride it more than once. For those who don't want to shuttle, you can ride it as a loop.

After riding all day, we'll head back to camp.

Beginner/Intermediate Ride:
Ride the Red Canyon paved bike trail here:
https://www.traillink.com/trail/red-canyon-bicycle-trail/

More info: https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/7017046/red-canyon-bike-trail-33016

Non-Riders:
For those who won't be riding, you can visit nearby Bryce Canyon National Park, Red Canyon, or Calf Creek Falls for some great hikes. If you want to drive a few hours, you can check out Peekaboo and Spooky gulch slot canyons in Escalante.

Camping:

We will be camping in the same spot as last night (Red Canyon)

Friday, Sept 7th - Cedar City

dvanced long distance Ride:
Virgin River Rim Trail - 29 miles, blue/black. Pretty big epic ride requiring a shuttle. Advanced riders in great shape recommended.

Intermediate Ride:
Navajo Lake Loop - 14 miles

Beginner/Intermediate Ride:
Iron Hills Trail System
Three Peaks Trail System

Camp at Gooseberry Mesa that night. Camp here:

Saturday, Sept 8th - Gooseberry Mesa, Wire Mesa, Little Creek Mesa, and Jem

Riding Gooseberry Mesa.

I'd also like to see if we can get 3 epic rides in, but I might be biting off more than I can chew. I'd like to ride gooseberry for sure in the morning, then see if we can add wire mesa and little creek mesa.

Beginner/intermediate options in the area: Jem.
Just down the road, the newer riders can ride the Jem trail.

That night we'll drive out to Tabernacle Hill to camp that night, stopping by the meadow hotsprings on the way.

Sunday, Sept 9th - head back to SLC.

If you'd like to attend, let us know. There are no permits, so we can have as big of a group as we want, and people can join last second. Shoot me an email or text with the people you'll be bringing.
