Hiking Jenny Lake in Grand Teton NP

In this episode, I'm joined by a special guest...my dad! Together we hike the the Jenny Lake Loop in Grand Teton National Park. This 7 mile hike (plus the 1 mile construction detour we hit,) is a beautiful amble through the woods with stunning views of Jenny Lake. The trail is rolling in a few places but there's no real elevation gain. Coming along the east side of the lake, the trail is only a few yards from a a paved one lane road for about a mile. We only passed one car but expect a to see a lot more traffic if you hike this closer to peak season.

Each state has different laws, but the NPS does not allow firearms. So if you're in GTNP you'll need to leave it at home, in the car, or in the RV and just bring your bear spray.

We totally understand why some people want the protection of a firearm in the backcountry, but a lot of studies have shown bear spray to be far more effective than firearms on bears (especially grizzlies). A grizzly bear has a 1" thick skull, with 1" of fat on top of it. Are there firearms that can penetrate that? Sure, but you're probably not going to want to hike with it, or be close enough for it to be effective on the bear. Wyoming has some great backcountry where you can carry firearms, provided you follow their state laws.

Guns are allowed in national parks. Just follow proper etiquette...

Interesting, thanks for posting that. In the Tetons, the firarm may not be discharged (unless you're hunting, with a hunting license), and cannot be used as a wildlife protection strategy.
