Hello Silverton!

It was time to move on again and this time we were bound for Silverton Colorado. The drive up highway 550 from Durango to Silverton is a 2 lane winding road with nearly 3000 feet of elevation gain. We were a little nervous but we researched it and people say if you just take your time it's not a problem.

As the highway started to climb we were pretty happy to see that the posted speed limit never got above 35MPH. There were also large  frequent turnouts so we could pull off to let people pass as often as we needed. That really took a lot of the pressure off. We took things slow and steady and our van, Fred, was a total champ pulling the Airstream.

Past experience has taught us that it's a whole other world above 7000 feet in elivation. These high mountain regions are a magical place where weather forecasts don't mean very much and it storms almost everyday. On our drive we had some rain that eventually gave way to hail. But despite a bit of weather we made it to Silverton just fine and found us a great little spot to boon-dock.

Stay tuned  to The More We Explore on Youtube and in the coming episodes you'll see us explore some of Colorado's historic mining country.

Hey this is Lance from the Wind River Trip last year. You saw us at a low point when we lost my brother Judd!. Well we are going to be doing the Maroon Bells loop by Aspen starting Sept 9th. We hope to complete the loop by Monday, Sept 12th. It's 26-28 miles over 4 high mtn passes over 12,000 ft. Gorgeous! We are also going to try and summit Snowmass Peak a 14 er on Sunday 9/11 and then get back on the loop at Snowmass Lake. We would go up/over from the West to the East. I saw you would be pretty close to the area. If your interested in joining us for some/all of the trip let me know. We have a group of 4 going the entire way and my parents will be joining us on night one about 3-4 miles out from the trailhead at the Maroon Bells parking lot. Our plan is 3-4 miles night one, 11-12 miles day 2 to Geneva Lake and then summit Snowmass Peak the next day and continue on 4-5 miles to just before the last pass. We would then complete the trip last day, Monday about 6-7 miles. Great to see you getting started on your new lifestyle. Take Care.

Steve and Tess love to explore nature, whether it be backpacking, packrafting, mountain biking, hiking, or just wandering.  The more we explore, the more we realize just how little we've seen.
